Choosing Paver Colors and Borders for Your Patio

Paver patio with a dark border, curved steps and an open wood overhead structure beside a brick house

Choosing paver colors is easier when you compare a few options beside your home. For a patio in Mocksville, Winston-Salem or a nearby community, start with the features that will stay: brick, siding, steps and existing outdoor walls. Then decide whether the paving should blend into that setting or create a clear contrast.

Compare paver colors beside your home

Bring actual samples outside before making a final choice. Place them beside the house and any surface the patio will meet. Look at them in morning light, afternoon light and shade. A color that looks balanced in a product photo may look different beside your brick or siding.

Choose two or three combinations to compare. One might pick up a warm tone from the house; another could use a quieter neutral. Ask to see several pieces of a blended paver so you can judge the range of colors, rather than choosing from one small piece.

Give the border a clear purpose

A contrasting border can frame the patio or make a walkway connection easier to see. A closely matched border creates a more understated edge. Think about which effect suits your yard before adding several accent colors.

The border is also part of the layout. Discuss how it will turn corners, meet steps and connect with other paved areas. Ask your installer to show the planned pattern and border together. The appearance of a decorative border is a separate decision from the edge restraint needed for the installation.

Consider the size of the space and the pattern

Color, paver size and pattern work together. In a compact space, compare how much visual detail you want around furniture and planting beds. For a larger patio, discuss whether a simple field pattern with one accent will give the space enough definition. There is no single combination that fits every home.

Browse our finished project gallery for ideas, and save the examples you like. Tell us which detail caught your eye: the border, the color blend, the shape or the way the paving meets the house.

Bring these decisions to your estimate

Before your estimate, gather photos of the yard, approximate dimensions and two or three material examples. Note any existing paving you want to keep. Ask about product availability, the proposed pattern, border details and how the new work will meet adjoining surfaces.
